For more information, go to the New England Greenway Consortium web site.

Bedford Friends of the Minuteman Bikeway Annual Meeting
Wednesday, April 9, 7:30 pm, Bedford Town Center, 12 Mudge Way*, Bedford, MA
Beyond Depot Park - Extension of the Minuteman Bikeway to Concord and Billerica
"Where does the Bikeway go from here?" cyclists who've reached Depot Park, a focal point where the Minuteman ends and unimproved trails branch west and north toward Concord and Billerica on a pair of abandoned railroad beds, frequently ask. Good question! To catalyze discussion of the answer, the Friends have prevailed upon Craig Della Penna, called by The Ride Magazine "the most effective advocate for bicycling and rail-to-trail issues in the eastern United States," to give a talk describing conversion efforts underway in Eastern Massachusetts and the social, political, and funding issues they face. Following Craig's presentation, representatives from Minuteman towns and towns planning Bikeway connections will, using his extensive knowledge and experience as a resource, debate the trail network's future.

About the "Minuteman Extension" and the "Narrow Gage Rail Trail"
The abandoned "Reformatory Line" to Concord, a segment of the Bay Circuit Trail now referred to as the "Minuteman Extension," is currently a hard-packed dirt trail greatly favored by walkers and off-road cyclists. To better serve these users, the Bedford Rotary is constructing an automobile parking area at the west end of the path at Route 62. Given the several housing developments planned or in progress along the Extension and its potential as a conduit from them and west Bedford to the Town Center, cycling advocates sees this as an opportune moment seek upgrading of the path to a paved surface.
Going north from Depot Park, the Narrow Gage Rail Trail (tracing the route of the nation's first two-foot gage railbed) is currently surfaced with stonedust to the Billerica line. Plans are to link it to the proposed Yankee Doodle Bikeway that town is designing.

    * The Town Center is located in Bedford's municipal complex on Mudge Way, just off Route 225 (The Great Road). To get there, ask an on-line mapping service (MapQuest . www.mapquest.com, is one) for directions to the Great Road/Mudge Way intersection, or find the intersection on a suburban street atlas and plot the best route yourself. Once on Mudge Way, take the first left, past the police station, to an expansive parking area on the right. Park and walk toward the Town Center, a yellow-painted, wooden, former school building with brick wings on both sides just to the south of the Town Hall, an impressive brick structure with a cupola on top. At the Center, look for signs directing you to the meeting, held in a large ex-classroom upstairs and to the right.

Assabet River Rail Trail Monthly meeting

    Framingham Rail Trail Public Forum
Monday June 23, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm, Memorial Building - Public Hearing Room, 150 Concord Street, Framingham
If you live in Framingham or Sudbury, you are strongly urged to attend this critical meeting regading the proposed Framingham to Sudbury Rail Trail.
In 2002, Framingham created a town committee to explore the possibility of converting an unused CSX rail line in Framingham and Sudbury into a rail trail. This trail would connect to the proposed Bruce Freeman Trail, and to the proposed Mass Central Rail Trail.
Last fall the Framingham Rail Trail Task Force hosted 3 abutter meetings. The idea was to introduce them to the concept and listen to their concerns. Angry abutters turned up in force.
This meeting will be the first and probably the only meeting which is targeted at the general public. The idea is to get input from the public, but primarily from Framingham and Sudbury residents.
